1st day: arrival in Rome and transfer to the hotel

Free time at leisure in the Italian capital

Start the day with:

This tour is perfect for visitors with only a short time in Rome, who want to see the very best of Rome past and present. Visit the Colosseum, Rome's most famous site where gladiators once battled lions in a fight for their lives, subject always to the whims of emperors and the turn of a thumb. Then set off on a journey through the winding streets and picturesque piazzas of the city, exploring Rome as it is today - a city where iPhones bleep inside ancient ruins and where modern life plays out on a stage set centuries ago.

Our tour starts with a bang at the Colosseum. We'll skip the long lines to get inside this magnificent structure where your English-speaking guide will tell you the stories and point out the details that bring this important slice of history to life. Then it's on to the Palatine and the Roman Forum for a walk through other periods of Ancient Roman history. See the spot where Remus and Romulus, the legendary founders of Rome were raised by their wolf mother; march down the same paved road once graced by victorious Roman armies; and explore the easily discernable remains of the banks, temples and homes of Ancient Rome.

We'll take a well-deserved break next for lunch in the historical center of the city. Your guide will recommend a spot or you can follow your nose to one of the countless trattorias and pizzerias around the area. Soak up the atmosphere before the next leg of our tour, a journey through the best of modern Rome. We'll wander the picturesque streets and piazzas of the city, seeing the most famous sights - from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and splendid Piazza Navona with its incredible Bernini fountain. Again your guide will bring old sights (from Ancient Roman times through to the Renaissance) to life with the stories and myths that make Rome quite unlike any other city in the world. Want to know why Raphael died so young? Or why there is one spot by the Trevi Fountain from where your view is completely obscured? Listen to your guide as they lead you on a trek that takes in the length and breadth of Rome's historical center.

Sites visited may include but are not limited to Piazza del Popolo, Santa Maria del Popolo Church, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Colonna, Palazzo Montecitorio, Pantheon, Palazzo Madama (Senate of the Italian Republic), Piazza Navona- Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Campo de Fiori and Skip the Line entrance and visit inside Colosseum, Palatine Hill including view of Circus Maximus, and the Roman Forum / "Via Sacra".

3rd day: we recommend the visit of the Vatican!

The Vatican Museums are home to over nine miles of art, much of which is never seen by the general public, either for timing or access reasons. Delve deeper into the Vatican Museums than ever before with this Extended Vatican Tour that takes you where the public cannot usually go and visits more general access areas of the museums than a classic Vatican tour.

This special access Skip the Line tour crosses velvet ropes to gain rare access to the famous Bramante Staircase, a dizzying spiral of carved stone built in 1512 inside a square tower. It once bore the weight of horses, but few ever set foot on it these days, making this visit particularly special.

A sure highlight of the tour will be the beautiful paintings of the Vatican Pinacoteca painting gallery, including Raphaels Transfiguration, Caravaggios Deposition from the Cross and Leonardo Da Vincis unfinished St. Jerome in the Wilderness.

On top of that we will visit all the general access rooms covered in our basic Vatican Museums tour, from the Pinecone Courtyard to the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of the Maps, the Gallery of the Candelabra and a highlight of any tour, the Raphael Rooms.

Of course your tour also includes the Vatican Museums most famous room, a room whose threshold has a higher footfall than the museums themselves because so many visitors come twice. Over the course of your tour, your guide will have described the works in here, explaining with the aid of photos and drawings, what each section means so that when you arrive here at the Sistine Chapel, you will have time to yourself to take it all in.

The last stop on our extended tour takes you through a special door in the Sistine Chapel and past another long queue to gain access to St. Peter's Basilica. Every day but Wednesday (when the Papal Audience often means that the Basilica is closed) you'll have a guided tour inside this colossal building - one of the most important in all of Christianity and home to Michelangelo's famous sculpture, La Pieta.

This Extended Vatican Museums Tour is perfect for art-lovers and visitors with an interest in seeing a little more of what the Vatican Museums have to offer. With Skip the Line Access you will not have to waste your precious time, and small group sizes of 20 people or less mean that your visit will be intimate, your passage around the museums seamless, and your guide easy to interact with.
